You're reading During WWII somewhere between 3-5 million Gypsies, Slavs, homosexuals, mentally and deficient, and other minorities killed in the death camps, why is it only the Jew get lionized?
Comments
Thankyou for knowing that, mrbuddhafreak. There was at least one camp opened for us (no, I cannot remember what it was called... I have to look it up).
.
Also, our dead are millionS in and of our own, current guesstimate being about 5:

.
Rromani and Sinti, both Gypsies, were targeted. Sinti are directly related to us genetically.

No one maybe has downplayed the plight of Gypsies, Slavs and others, but they sure had not played it up either. It was not until I was out of school and started to dig on my own that I even knew other who were not Jews were involved. There might have been more Jews in mumber than any single other group but to me it seems that those other groups get relegated to the back of the buss because there was not as many of them. That would be like saying if a racial serial killer kills 8 African Americans, 5 Asians but only 1 Hispanic, the murder of the Hispanic was less tragic than the others.

The Romani and Sinti were a problem, ideologically, for the Nazis. Obviously Aryan (more so, actually), they were even allowed into the German army until 1942. It then that they decided to kick their persecution into high gear. The largest Gypsy concentration (as near as I can tell, there is no "racial" difference between the Romani and the Sindi) was in Buchenwald, though there were smaller camps in different places definitely including some in Czechoslovakia and a small (by scale) camp at Auschwitz.
The number of dead is fuzzy because there was never a good census of the peoples in Europe. If a-b=c, you can't get a good estimate of b if you only know c and not a. Current scholastic estimates run at about 1.5-2 million dead. But just about everyone admits their numbers are only educated guesses.
by mrbuddhafreak on September 10th, 2009
Lety and Lackenbach were formed for us. Auschwitz had the notorious "Gypsy Family Camp" and darling Mengele who had a particular "love" for us. Somewhere in my links I have a site that breaks down Gypsy population in the various camps. It might have been Buchenwald that had the largest.
.
Current scholastic estimates are 1.5 to 2 million dead now?? That is much up from what the "scholars" were shoving that it was 250,000. That is progress.

As an aside, my father grew up in Western Ukraine (Galicia) and lived with "tsihany" in his village before the war. Ukrainians (old school) have an odd love-hate thing with the Romani people. They have a love for the freedom of some of the life and some of the xenophobic fear of the outsider. That said, my father would have to give my mother (2nd generation Canadian) hell for her stupid superstitions regarding "Gypsies" and Jews. She had every negative stereotype fixed in her head as truth in spite of probably never meeting a dozen Jewish people in her life. She probably never met a Romani person, yet honestly believed that they stole babies (doesn't every outsider group do that?). My father on the other hand had no problem with the Romani and had had Romani and Jewish friends, though admittedly he had his own goofy Jewish issues. Both of them are gone, now and if there is anything negative in what I say, it's not to speak ill of the dead, just to say the truth.
by mrbuddhafreak on September 10th, 2009
Eh, that is normal for many people. I am used to it.
.
It seems that most outsider groups steal babies. We are supposed to eat them as well though. :P

My parents escaped Communist Romania.

Hypocrisy: the other numbers weren't played down as much as ignored (see part of my comment to Arisztid), it's true. But when I grew up, the figure we were always given were about 11 million dead in the camps, about 6 million of those Jews. The numbers have moved around a little over the years, though I have never seen anybody deliberately ignore any of the groups entirely. I do think that TomFlew and Headbanger Ed have good points, though. PR and books written about the Holocaust have definitely left the impression on people who don't dig further that the whole thing was a Jewish story.
Regarding your serial killer analogy, I have often heard the number (not in my head at the moment) of "Americans" killed on 9/11. Can you give me the numbers of those killed in the Twin Towers who were not American and a national breakdown? It's not a real question, just a demonstration that people don't really retain specific numbers. Of course every death is tragic.

Arisztid, you forgot that Gypsy girls are easy. And I thought only Jews ate babies. Do you guys share recipes? My dad...long story.
by mrbuddhafreak on September 10th, 2009
Jews ate babies? I did not know that... maybe we did share some recipes. Here is a short compilation of how I answer this silliness:

.
And, of course, Gypsy girls are easy despite the fact that they could be tossed out of their Clan for it. D'oh.
.
If you would be interested in the reason for the Jewish exclusivity, or at least near exclusivity, mrbuddhafreak, please email me.
by Arisztid on September 10th, 2009
Thanks for the offer but I do know the reasoning, all in all. Most people think of anything older than about 20 years ago as just short of ancient history and have fixed attitudes. I know enough of the history of the (total) Holocaust to know where much of the belief in the Jewish "exclusivity" comes from - laziness, both individual and in our educational systems. I also know some of the history of the postwar Jewish "claiming" of the Holocaust. In the end, I suppose, people have the resources to search (and it's not difficult) out the truth. And I have to confess, it isn't my main area of historical interest. So I have my own laziness, although the history of the Romani people in Europe in earlier centuries does pique my interest. Btw, my apologies for any misspellings or errors in names of the peoples.
by mrbuddhafreak on September 11th, 2009
No worries about misspellings or any of that lot.
.
Basically, it comes down to exclusivity and maintaining exclusivity. Yes, I have solid proof from the proverbial horses' mouths.

Making Generalizations
Another very successful tactic of propaganda is generalization. Generalizations tend to obscure important facts about the real issues in question, and they are frequently used to demean entire groups of people. "Gypsies [or immigrants] are thieves" is, for instance, a phrase frequently heard in some European countries. But is that true?
Richardos Someritis, a columnist, says that in one country such perceptions caused a kind of "xenophobic and very often racist frenzy" against foreigners. It has been shown, however, that when it comes to delinquent acts, the culprits in that country are just as likely to be native-born as foreign. For example, Someritis notes that surveys have shown that in Greece, "96 out of 100 crimes are perpetrated by [Greeks]." "The causes of criminal activity are economic and social," he observes, "not 'racial.'" He blames the media "for systematically cultivating xenophobia and racism" by a slanted coverage of crime.

Eugenics in Action
After the forced sterilization of up to 225,000 people, millions of others—Jews, Romanies (Gypsies), the disabled, and other "undesirables"—were exterminated under the guise of eugenics.
