  • I suppose the insinuation is that a Jew can't insult another Jew for being Jewish, a black person can't insult another person for being black. Whereas as a white person could use 'black' as an insult, and vice versa. Basically a person can't insult another person for being the same thing as they are, because then they'd be insulting themselves. It gets 'nasty' when you insult somebody from being DIFFERENT to you.
  • That is a very good question. I don't understand it one bit. I totally agree with you. I've noticed people doing it all the time. My neighbor is Puerto Rican, and he always call me a cracker, so recently I've been giving him hell telling him only my white friends can call me cracker. (It's a joke we have) +3
  • How about rising above, and refusing to make fun of people based on their religion, ethnicity, or anything else? A difficult concept to grasp, I know, but it's the best way to avoid insulting the wrong person.
  • I think it is because If you are calling other people by chosen names and you are like them it is taken differently. But when you are doing it out of hatred it is not nice and people have a right to be offended. I don't no why people choose to generalize about anyone and I don't like to hear it come out of anyones mouth. I don't care if you are purple or what religion you are I am no better than the next person. God created us all equal. I love everybody!!! Everybody is special in my eyes.
  • It sure didn't help Mike "Kramer" Richards out. As the more stygmatized culture is, the more taboo it is for outside cultures to make fun of them. Case in point: comedians like dave Chappelle can make infinite black jokes, yet he also has free reign at making jabs at white people. It's like a sociological pecking order. Those lower than you in ethnic strata become touchy subjects. This will change as those in lower statuses become upgraded either by new arrivals to the social caldron or the evolution of new grades of humanity.
  • I think what Carmella says is true: "I suppose the insinuation is that a Jew can't insult another Jew for being Jewish, a black person can't insult another person for being black." It is also the knowledge that people such as the Jews and the African-Americans have been very oppressed and hurt and calling them by names such as n****r and "j****y" recall the horrors they have been through. However, to say these to each other in some way releases the tensions associated with these words. It is like saying the words "i don't believe in monsters" over and over again as a child, until the word "monster" loses its ability to frighten. There is also a feeling of "family" or "community" in many jokes. In your family, you might joke about your sister's weight or her dumbness, but if someone else said the same thing, you might get angry. it is a sign of acceptance into a group, when you can join in personal jibes.
  • When I was younger we were called negroes, coloreds, afro-american, black and african american. I do honestly do not know what to call myself. Most of the time I say black because I am darker. But all in all, I feel just like an American. I am always amazed when people make racial jokes but feel that they have a need to do it and do not get upset or angry with them. One of my neighbors here in Missouri told me after talking to me once that african's were better off when they were bought kicking and screaming to the U.S. I was not angry or offended. What could I do? I am not a psychiatrist and am not in charge of his mental status. I wish that I had so much time to come up with that kind of "witty banter". Racial jokes to me have to be tolarated like fungus or spastic colons. We cannot stop it completly it will always be out. Someone has to have some decorum and not spur this kind of ignorance by making these people get worse
  • It is never ok
  • It's called "the double standard" and is something that must be eradicated.
  • Let me ask you this.... Why would you want to call a black person a nigger? Are you that anxious to drop the n-bomb on every black person you see???? The way I see it is that it's like making fun of your own family. I make fun of my sister all the time but if somebody else does it then it is not okay with me.
  • Meh, doesn't really matter to me. I'm not exactly dieing to make fun of African Americans or Jewish people or any other race for that matter. What other people do, that's their deal, it has no effect on me. It is what it is.
  • its because when you are a minority you feel like everyone else who is party of your minority shares a special bond with you. It's almost like family. A person in my family can call me any type of name they want, but i wouldnt really care because they are my family and i love them and i know they love me at least more than they love other people from other families. That would make me think they are just joking. If a person outside the family called me a name i would be pissed because i would think they are serious. Im black, and if i ever called a white person a cracker it would only be because i dont like the person. SO i expect that if a white person calls me a n***er they must not like me, so i would have to destroy them.
  • It is not clever nor is it becoming to make fun out of anyone regardless of Creed Colour or Race......if you agree, write.....So Wrong....
  • I think all words that are used to describe an ethnic group or religious group or sector should be eliminated from our vocabulary...period! People within a group use it with each other--does NOT make it right, but they do. There are names people use to describe Latinos--I don't use them AT ALL and refuse to be called any one of those. Well, the ones who have have lost a few teeth. I think it's despicable calling people by a derrogatory term, no matter who they are!
  • Because we live in a HYPOCRITICAL society!!! The "N" word is acceptable, when used BY blacks AMONGST blacks. (Or amongst all others--when NO blacks are present!!!) All is generally well in our society, when neither of our "TWO-FACES" are offended!!!
  • Because people don't have a sense of humor anymore. It's sad that everyone's so eager to be offended.
