Question

Help answer this question below.

Does it annoy anybody else on here that some people's english and spelling in both the questions they ask and answers they post, is simply awful? I'm going to start downrating them for stupidity. (I know my english etc. isn't perfect but its not THAT bad)

You probably shouldn't threaten to downrate people for English offenses until you correct your own. There are at least five spelling or grammatical errors in your question.

While i understand that this is the World Wide Web, its not the "non-English" that irks me ... its the Text-ese that makes me weep for the future ... spelling, grammar, syntax, and generating a complete and coherant thought is becoming a lost skill ... no wonder so much of today's music is just repeating the same 5 or 6 words over and over and over and over

Be careful with that attitude. There are thousands of ABers whose native language is not English. If they need help with a question, it's not correct to down rate them for spelling or grammar errors. Downrating for reasons like that can get you in trouble with the Community Leaders and site admins.
By the way - the 'E' in English is upper case. And there is an apostrophe in 'it's'.

    Does it annoy me? Yes

I think it indicates a lack of respect on the part of the poster for themselves and their reader. From time to time I see questions on AB that I suspect are from people who are not English speakers. There is a tremendous difference between people who post sloppy questions and answers simply because they are lazy and people who struggle because English is a second language.

I won't down rate for language because it's impossible to tell in every case why the question is a mess but there have been times when I have been sorely tempted.

It annoys me and I have been called OC for it. Does that label bother me? Not at all! I wear it as a badge of honour that I have upset someone whose only skill is tossing out a negative label.

You may want to hold off a bit on the DRs until you have learned to differntiate between people who don't know english that well and people that choose to spell poorly. Either way they may not know any better. Some of the people that use poor grammar on purpose think that they are being cute, or believe that the only place for proper usage is in school.

Check the person's profile to see if they are from an English speaking (mother tongue that is) country and then, if they are ..... go for the DR's! Why not. I don't (yet) but it's very tempting. Some questions on here are from trailer trash though so it could be argued they have a right to be here even though they're illiterate but if you have a computer you can teach yourself better English usage. Text speak is nauseating in excess too. I'm with you on this one. +++

I agree. Some of the questions I can't even answer because I'm not sure what they are asking.

    1) Are we better persons because we can spell better?
Are we more intelligent than others?
Please think also about the non native speakers.

    2) Of course I find bad spelling annoying, because it makes communication more difficult. But those people could still ask valid, interesting questions. I think we should be a little tolerant here. I never downrate anyway.

    3) Some people also don't have really bad spelling, they just use a specific slang such as SMS language or Internet slang.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_slang
As most of Answerbag users don't understand this slang, I often suggest to them to use Standard English.
