No....Tramadol is NOT an opiate, and it will not show up as one on a drug test. I just had a test 2 days ago, and I take Tramadol for a herniated disk, and it didn't show. Plus, if you have a prescription, there shouldn't be a problem anyway.

Hello I had looked this question up prior to a pre-employment drug screen done by I dont want to say the name in case they start screening for tramadol. It starts with Q and ends with S (2 words) (Q**** ***S). Anyway I took 3 tramadol the day before the test and it did not show up. I think tramadol would something they would have to specifically be looking for. Anyone who is worried that tramadol might show up before getting that big job, dont worry you will be fine! atHome drug tests (12 panel) don't see tramadol either so don't waste your money on one. I checked that out as well that same night I took tramadol. I promise promise promise! Take my word! Not any of these clowns on here that say they failed. They had to have taken something else. Thanks for your time and hope this gives you a sense of relief. Trust me you're ok!

need to be careful about taking tramadol, and the 12 panel drug test does detect. You can go to the drug store and buy the First Check Drug Test. I did a test one with tramadol hcl 50 mg and someone else took the test taking cyclobenzaprine 10mg . Both will show up...

People who say they will show up in a drug test have no idea what they are talking about. Most of them tested positive after a urine test and they were taking tramadol and a whole crap load of other garbage as well. IE: XANAX, VALIUM, etc.. it's the other stuff that shows positive. Tramadol will not, I REPEAT WILL NOT show positive for opiates !! Trust me on this, I work in a lab and thats what we do. You have nothing to worry about. You can be found positive for tramadol use if they do a mass spectrometer test and they know to look for tramadol. Since Tramadol is not a controlled substance it is not tested for. Neither is it in the opiate class of drugs. It only produces opiate like effects because it binds to opiate receptors in the brain. Furthermore lets talk about the law. Did you know that in the U.S. you must have a prescription to obtain tramadol, however you can possess Tramadol in the U.S. without a valid subscription. Hence, not a controlled substance.

I can second that result. I had been taking tramadol for about 6 months, buying them over the counter in Mexico and I was up to 15-16 a day and one day at work we had a suprise drug test. I was on about 4 of them when I took the urine test. I did not have a positive result at all.

Many of the answers here seem to be guesses.Good ones but never the less guesses.I think that you should know what you are talking about FOR SURE before you post on here(such as Krystan and the annonymous medical assitant who DO seem to defianltly KNOW what they are talking about). If you DO have pharmacy skills and know what you ARE talking about, then PLEASE continue to post your answers. However if guessing please leave it to the pros.Thank you for you "comments"though.

Wehater it will show up as an opitae or not i do not know BUT i do know that even though it is not a controlled med it is still ILLEGAL to posses ANY PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION without a valid prescription.

So mr. anonamys who works in the"lab' and is on probation - you should know what your talking about before posting what you think are facts.

If you have prescription meds without a script you are braking the law.

I JUST passed the 5 panel drug test while taking Tramadol. I was very nervous. My doctor had given me a script to help me wean off Vicodin. Well, I ran out so I ordered a bottle from the internet. I was taking about 6 daily when I passed the test just yesterday.

******I did some research and I know that if you take a Healthcare Professionals Drug Screen, they DO test for Tramadol. It is fast becoming one of the most addictive drugs on the market because it's NOT a controlled substance. But, the 5 panel does not test for Tramadol to date. However, Tramadol is under review by the FDA and may soon become a controlled substance. And once it is considered a controlled substance, they will test for it!!!

PLEASE be careful with this drug. One night, I had a seizure and was rushed to the hospital. A friend of mine had TWO seizures within a month while taking this medication. After having my seizure and knowing that my friend had two, I STILL kept taking it in large doses. I don't want to lecture anyone but please know this is HIGHLY addictive. I’m in the process of weaning my body and I’m down to 3 per day. By Monday, I should be off these things for good. I will never mess with this stuff again!!!!!!!!

But, my 5 panel test (OPI, COC, THC, PCP, METH/AM.) tested for the below drugs.

    • Amphetamines (including Methamphetamine, "Crystal Meth")
    • Cannabinoids (THC, Marijuana)
    • Cocaine
    • Opiates (Codeine, Morphine, Heroin)
    • Phencyclidine (PCP)

In most cases, the 5 panel test doesn’t test for Oxycodone, Vidcodin. But, more and more places are including Oxy, Vic, etc. in the 5 panel tests because abuses of controlled substances are on the rise. The 7, 9, 10, and 12 panel drug screens do test for Oxycodone, Vidcodin, Loratab, Lorcet, etc. There is a specific test for Tramadol which they use if you are in the Healthcare industry. Which test they perform really depends on the job you are applying for and which screening facility you get tested at. Do your research online. Most facilities outline the screening process.

Please know that I’m not encouraging anyone to fraudulently pass a drug test nor am I judging anyone. Opiate addiction is tough to break. I know; I have been fighting it for years off and on. The best thing you can do is get help. I just want you to have the same information I had so you can make the best decision for yourself. As a struggling addict, I’m begging everyone to stay AWAY from Tramadol!!!!!!! It is dangerous. Trust me.

I googled the question as well because I just took a drug test for a government job. I'm wondering if they would do the 12 panel drug testing to look for stuff like Tramadol? If they do, as long as I have a prescription I'm ok, right?

Tramadol and O-desmethyltramadol may be quantitated in blood, plasma or serum to monitor for abuse, confirm a diagnosis of poisoning or assist in the forensic investigation of a traffic or other criminal violation or a sudden death. Most commercial opiate immunoassay screening tests do not cross-react significantly with tramadol or its major metabolites, so chromatographic techniques must be used to detect and quantitate these substances. The concentrations of O-desmethyltramadol in the blood or plasma of a person who has taken tramadol are generally 10-20% those of the parent drug.

I was addicted to opiates and a doctor (in good faith) put me on Tramadol as an alternative. Then I got addicted to the Tramadol. When the drug first came out it was described as being non addictive, but trust me it is. It's a great pain reliever if you take it AS PRESCRIBED though.

Tramadol is not screened for and should not produce any sort of postive on a standard urine test. The half-life of Tramadol is about 7 hours. A mass spectrometer (gc/ms) would probably be required to detect it after a simple urine extraction method. While this is possible to do, it is not standard procedure even for urine tests which are processed in labs. So unless a urine sample is being sent in to a laboratory, it is unlikely that Tramadol will cause any sort of positive test result.

I've been taking tramadol off and on for the past three or more years during my time active duty in the army, and now through the VA for my spinal injuries from IED blasts in iraq. I myself have not had, or experienced any sort of craving or DT's while on or off them. Also this drug is clearly described with my perscriptions that it is not on opiate, or a controlled substance. This is the information printed in clear english by the VA's pharmaceutical team. So to answer the original question at hand.....no, you can keep taking your tramadol because it isn't an opiate.

I have been told by a health professional that Tramadol will not show up on a standard drug test. However, I'm still iffy about it, and wouldn't want to jeopardize my job for some stupid medication.

I am a medical assistant, and I have taken multiple pharmachology classes, and I can tell you tramadol or ultram is not an opiate and will not show up. I am also on probation, and take random urin test at least once or twice a week, while taking ultram, and have never had a positive result.

Tramadol will in fact show up on a 10 panel test, i have a legal script for it and was tested today and it did in fact show up, as long as you have a script (LEGAL) for the medication you are fine.
