I was driving on the freeway in my Dodge Ram 1500 v8 and as I was accelerating the engine made a popping/clanking sound and cannot accelerate any further. I checked the oil and transmission fluid and everything looks ok. what could be the problem?

check the pistons or the spark plugs for any damage
