Actually, assuming you're in US, blame the wiring codes. with a 20 amp fuse/circuit breaker feeding everything, it's quite easy to start a fire.
Put an appropriate fuse at every appliance, and an ELCB or GFCI (different name same thing), there is almost no chance of a toaster fire.
Heck the UK uses 240 volts everywhere even for corded mowers in the yard, and hardly anyone dies because of it.
I think we'd better think very carefully before using cars. They cause far more damage than toasters.
Actually, I don't have a toaster, and if I did, i doubt i'd unplug it.

Yes, I heard that it can be dangerous. I tried to get in the habit of unplugging, but I just couldn't stick to it. But I've never had a problem.
I only plug in small appiances when I am going to use them and unplug them when I am finished.
