I don't think "addiction" would be the right word to use, considering the connotations of it.
However, an "obsession", preferably not an all-consuming one, would be valid. We joke that AB is an addiction, but the vast majority of us can function very well in real-life. As an addiction, that would not be true. As an obsession, it would be, at least the way I believe. ;-)
I would argue his choice of word. I would remove "addiction" and replace it with "passion". What helps you get out of bed is passion..for living in my case. Addiction has a negative connotation to it and passion could have negatives associated but the kind of passion I mean is not limited to romantic passion. If you don't care much about anything...if you can't find joy, excitement, purpose...then getting out of bed seems pointless, doesn't it? Happy Tuesday to you! :)
I think it's a funny, tongue-in-cheek remark. Although I would say that his advice doesn't work if you become addicted to something and then lose access to it.
I don't think that he meant it literally.
He problably meant that everyone should find something that they can't live without or something that drives them to get up in the morning.
the context inwhich your professor remarked I believe is one taken that we as people are creates of habit and we need to find positive motivators to give us reasons to keep life interesting. I believe he would agree there are many addictions that affect us negatively some that engulf ourlives and take away enjoyment in life steal our dreams and leave us an empty shell of a person. With very few people that too help another brother or sister
I think it's pretty wise but it can be looked at in many different ways, but i like that quote. +3
