What a good point... Any human on the face of this Earth is prone to errors, including “prophets”. Although they are many real prophets out there, mostly found in Churches believes in Prophets, Gifts of the Holy Sprit, Healings etc…they also err at times. In addition, there is a dark side of this blessed gift of God. Many "Churches" and "Prophets" have started on their own initiative, not by ordination form God. These Churches then, often Institute their own “prophets“ for their own sake, and has nothing to do with God. That by the way stands for many religious denominations, not only for LDS Church. The proof of the prophet is that what his tongue has declared must come true. Good example of the Prophet in the Bible would be Isaiah or Jeremiah, the bad one for example – Balaam or Jezebel. The last too, although God called them to be a “prophets” they turn out not to abbey God direction. in Christ..

Actually it only makes sense. Why would God setup a Church, then allow someone to start teaching doctrines contrary to what He has revealed? We have been told this is the last time the Church will be established on earth, and that it will "stand forever". Even though many in the Church have spoken incorrectly at times, they have been corrected as needed. Truth will always prevail over false doctrine, as we receive our truth from God. The only one we look too, for absolute truth is our Prophet, who heads this Church. He will never lead us astray. But the final responsibility rests with us members individually. We are to go to the Lord ourselves and receive confirmation for every doctrine. We have that right and privilege. If we are led astray by others, it is our fault. ...Later

Often those in positions of dominance do and say what they please when they please because they have no superior to answer to. This is sometimes the reason for orthodoxy becoming herecy. The quote is actually in direct contradiction of something else the church teaches - that the Lord cannot intervene in our decisions and choices - that we have what they call 'free agency' and are 'agents unto ourselves' - that we are the one's that are allowed to make the choices and God will allow that and refrain from intervening.

It would depend on what you define "Astray" to be. I would take it as being allowed to lead the Church away from Christ. - While things have changed from time to time, the core doctrine is the same: Salvation is through Christ alone! :)
