I think it does. I do this also, I smile at most people that pass my way just to be friendly.

They have done studies where people are presented with someone who is smiling and it is hard for most people to NOT smile back. It is some kind of subconscious reflex to smile when you see someone else smile at you. I think of babies, when you smile and laugh with them... they usually smile and laugh back.

It would make them happy or make them think you are some kind of lunatic smiling all the time.

Aaaah! That wold explain the wave of questions like: he/she smiled at me, what does that mean? I work with someone who smiles at me all the time, what does that mean? There is this girl/boy in school who smiles every time I see her/him, what does that mean?

Sure, if you smile at people briefly then it can help to make their day a little better. But if you cross the point of staring at them, that´s where people will feel creeped out imo.

I try to be the same way. Whether or not it makes other people happy...I don't know. But it does me, so I'm gonna keep on doing it!

    Yes - hapiness is contagious.

"A smile costs nothing but gives much. It enriches those who receive it without making poorer those who give it. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. No one is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it, and no one is so poor that he cannot be made rich by it. A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business, and is the countersign of friendship. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and is nature's best antidote for the troubled. Yet, it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give a smile. Give them one of yours, as no one needs a smile so much as he who has none to give."

I think it makes people feel happy, just like when people used to smile and say 'Have a good day' and mean it even though one had never seen them before. You obviously have an appealing smile. The last time I smiled at a stranger she hit me over the head with her shopping bag! Needless to say I don't smile at strangers any more!
