Travel writer. Go to lovely locations around the world , stay at high class hotels and resorts , enjoy spas and foods and services ----so I can write about them....

I understand that when you are a frequent flyer and get to know ins and outs and airline staff and such, you get a lot of perks, bumps to 1st class, etc.

It all started when the engine fell apart on the runway before takeoff a week before Eastern airlines called it quits.

Then I was in a plane flying to Orlando when 9/11 hit and the trauma of that experience in that plane when we landed virtually sealed the deal on me never wanting to fly again.

Understood. I have a friend who loves to travel - she's an architect - been all over the world. Had a bad experience and she's developed a phobia. Really sad.

I've taken one major trip since 9/11 - to South America. Even though I was no where near middle east, it was different. Leaving Chile (stopover on way back) , the authorities delayed takeoff for one hr to bring threatening-looking men carrying high-powered rifles and mean-looking dogs on the plane to search for contraband, etc. Very unfun. I'm not too thrilled with FAA either. They are not proactive. Find all these issues with planes after the fact (being accidents, crashes, lawsuits, etc. ) Talk about a govt agy we can do without!!!

Yeah I hear you...speaking of guns...when we deplaned we were greeted by the Indiana National guard waving loaded M16's and screaming at us to run and leave the terminal immediately! Nobody knew what was really happening at that moment...very scary.
