You're confusing two completely unrelated things:
1. Activation is designed to ensure you've got a licensed copy. If activation fails, you won't be able to open documents at all.
2. Protection is applied by the author of the document, if they choose, to prevent accidental edits or edits by others. That's what the message you're seeing is talking about. To unprotect the document, click Tools > Unprotect document. You may be prompted for a password... if you don't know it, talk to the person who wrote the doc.

You're reading I have recently tried to activate word, have entered the product key but when trying to use word, i was informed that the modification is not allowed because the selection is locked !PLEASE HELP?
