  • Need more smileys, I guess. http://www.nerdtimes.com/emoticons/smileys_eng_w.asp :-] sarcasm
  • online you can't see peoples body language so smiley help. people may not be familiar with your personality or sense of humor and miss your intent.
  • Us Brits are good at , the yanks dont seem to get it, are you a yank. And it is funny, I think it because the yanks are mostly very intellignt lol
  • If you don't know the person, it is hard to know whether or not they are being serious. I recognize the sarcasm friends of mine use online, but I know them... otherwise... how are you suppose to know? You cannot hear tone of voice, etc. I expect people to pick up on certain comments being sarcasm, since in my world they cannot posisble be true, but it rarely works. I've tended to add <sarcasm> to the end of things I think might be taken the wrong way.
  • I think it does. I think it's because we can't hear the person speak, and when people use sarcasm in real life, they usually use a different tone than they usually do. And you can't detect that through written words. +5
  • It's definitely harder to pick up on sarcasm when it's written down. this website is notorious for it, you say something joking or in a sarcastic way.. and people take you seriously, Or just don't get it, at all! Others are just not intelligent enough to pick up on it! I know what you mean though, nothing is more discouraging than unappreciated sarcasm ;)
  • I try too - doesn't always work but I don't think it's limited to the internet. I have been known to cause offence when I verbally attempt sarcasm (or my own brand of humour). Some people get me and some people don't, I just moderate my comments to those people who have difficulty understanding me. Doesn't mean I'm wrong and it doesn't mean other people are stupid, it's just that everyone is different and sometime my attitude doesn't always gel with other peoples. I feel if you try it on the internet and some people don't understand, you'll probably get just as many who DO get the sarcasm. Don't get downhearted and don't change.
