G'day Bigkado69, Thank you for your question. Hernias can result in organ dysfunction, gangrene, and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. For this reason, they should be treated as soon as possible especially as the treatment doesn't take a while. Once treated, patients cannot do strenuos work or exercise for a while which can lead to weight gain. I have attached sources for your reference. No! Please visit site listed below http://www.emedicinehealth.com/hernia/article_em.htm Hernia Overview A hernia occurs when the contents of a body cavity bulge out of the area where they are normally contained. These contents, usually portions of intestine or abdominal fatty tissue, are often enclosed in the thin membrane that naturally lines the inside of the cavity. Although the term hernia can be used for bulges in other areas, it most often is used to describe hernias of the lower torso (abdominal wall hernias). Hernias by themselves usually are harmless, but nearly all have a potential risk of having their blood supply cut off (becoming strangulated). If the hernia sac contents have their blood supply cut off at the hernia opening in the abdominal wall, it becomes a medical and surgical emergency.

It appears that the answers given are not addressing your question so I will. I recently had an incisional/ventral hernia in my upper abdominal area where I already had a vertical scar from a previous surgery. I gained about 40 lbs in only 1 year! It was insidious and before I knew it I looked 6 months or more pregnant. I went to the ER and a CT Scan revealed the hernia. I was told it was "small" and I could wait. I waited another 8 months by the time I had the surgery I gained another 20 lbs and looked 9 months pregnant! My surgery took 2 hours (there were 3 hernias),and an overnight at the hospital. I am now almost one month post surgery and the weight is rapidly coming off, thank God!! So in answer to your question from my experience the answer is, YES you can gain weight from an untreated hernia. I have searched the Internet for information about this and only found one place where weight gain issues are addressed with regard to hernias. FYI: http://www.hernia.org/faq.html
