I've just found out that one of my guy friends has suiside thoughts. Someone else told me. I think he would be very mad if he found out i knew, but my friend that told me couldn't handle it all by herself and needed to talk to someone. But what can i do?

• It just the first time I've ever heard anybody say that it's normal for everyone to have suicidal thoughts. I'm 36 and have never knowm anybody that has had them or is having them. On the contrary, it is normal not to have suicidal thoughts.

• People with one idea and one idea only of 'normality' contribute not only to suicidal thoughts but also to suicide. Not many people have the strength to accept themselves against the apparent unacceptance of everyone/thing around them

• Sorry, I don't understand the first bit. How does my opinion of 'normal' contribute to anybody elses suicidal thoughts and ultimately suicide? Do my thoughts have the power to kill another person or influence them in any way at all?
  
  The second part well, lots and lots of people do accept themselves, in fact most do - this comes only with with age and experience - it requires an understanding of how the world works and how you fit into it. Inner confidence and self acceptance comes when we mature. The teenage years are hard because we are not yet fully adult and just have not been around long enough to gain the knowledge required.

• People who grow up in an environment where there appears to be only one 'acceptable' standard can feel terrible about themselves if they begin to, in their search _for_ themselves, find attributes within that are not considered 'normal'. Those who, use such terms as 'normal' polarize the issue & give the impression that there are only two ways to be: 'normal' and 'wrong', thereby contributing to an environment conducive to a lack of self-confidence... If one considers the power 'public opinion' has over most people (especially teenagers) (really, even something as pervasive as 'trends' would not exist if most people were not easily influenced by the opinions of others) it should be simple to see how the unconscious prejudice and xenophobia inherent in such attitudes could adversely affect some-one who is already, as you say, vulnerable.

• Just because it's different DOES NOT mean it's wrong! If it hurts your head to have your attitudes changed/challenged by a broader perspective, it seems that 'normal' in it's refusal to accept what it is not, is the attitude that is wrong....
