1. "Forrest Gump" Prior to seeing it, people were saying things like, "It will change your life!" I saw it, it was a movie, and nothing more than that. 2. "Training Day" (starring Denzel Washington & Ethan Hawke) Washington portrayed a drug-addicted, corrupt, philandering (cheating on his wife) police officer who leads a rookie detective down the same dead-end paths he hmself lived on. The movie's claims to fame was the fact that Washington was stepping out of the type-casting of the good-guy role, and that he cursed profusely throughout the film. All of this 'innovation' garnered him an Oscar for Best Actor. The Oscar was in fact a token gesture to atone for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences never having awarded one to a black actor. 2A. "Monsters' Ball" (starring Halle Berry & Billy Bob Thornton) The wife of a prison inmate, played by Berry, begins having a relationship with a former corrections officer who participated in her husband's execution (unbeknowst to her). As Denzel Washington above, Berry was lauded for being the first black actress to be awarded the Best Actress Oscar. In addition to simulated sex scenes with Thornton, Berry also bares her partially-naked body on-screen. So let me get this straight: since the dawn of American cinema, black women have been restricted to roles as either maids, buffoons or prostitutes, so the world goes ga-ga over a black woman succumbing to an interracial relationship, and getting naked on-screen, such to the point that the role gains an Oscar for Best Actress.
