It depends on what style of music you want to play. Playing scales are helpful if you want to play serious lead guitar in any genre, whether it's jazz, classical, metal, or whatever. If your primary interest does not lie in showcasing your solo skills, then it is unnecessary to play those boring scales. A basic understanding of music theory (http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/861567) plus simply practicing songs will take you far. When I first started playing, I learned one scale up and down the neck -- the Em pentatonic -- and I don't think it did me much good. Playing songs and solos in Em, however, were not only fun but educational.
