Pixar, like most studios, uses many different software packages to achieve thier animation. "Renderman" is thier rendering software, that is, the program simply renders (or draws) each frame. Before that has to happen, there needs to be 3D models, textures, lighting, and animation in each scene. These other 'tasks' of animation are done in seperate programs apart from renderman. For instance, Pixar's proprietary ANIMATION software (which is what was asked in this question) is call Marionette. You won't find any information on it on the web, because it is proprietary. Look though, to other commercial animation packages like Alias's MAYA (www.alias.com). Most software packages are generally the same, and you can get a good feel of what is used in the major animation studios by looking at Maya (a major percentage of large studios use MAYA anyhow - only a few use in-house packages.)

The second part of your question, "techniques" is a very general question. Pixar employs (to however a more artistic or better executed extent than thier rivals) the same basic animation principles that have been used since the very INFANCY of animation. Things like squash and stretch, anticipation and follow-through, etc. To learn these principles, most go to any one of the acclaimed animation schools (CalARTS, RIngling, Vancouver Film School - check their respective websites), and some teach themselves. A graet place to start is with the book "The Illusion of Life" by Frank Thomas And Ollie Johnston, two of the original "Nine Old Men" of Disney. For the best idea of what Pixar looks for in thier animators, check out the "schools" list on the Pixar website.

    Hope this helps.

Check out the Renderman Repository at www.renderman.org.

Meta answer: Search google for "renderman" and you will find the aforementioned site at the top of the list.
