  • Depends on where you go and how much your refund will be if any. H&R Block and those type places usually charge by how much you will get back and if you want a rapid refund. I suggest finding an independent person. They will charge anywhere from $50-$100 which is pretty good for the same service. YOu could be paying $200 or more with those big guys.
  • Even H&R does not charge by what you get back - it is illegal. And they also do not charge $100. On average a simple return from them will run you $200 os so. If the big guys are charging the same amount - they are not the big guys.
  • I usually go to H&R Block and for me it was 240 this year, but they ended up refunding my money because they made big mistakes, needless to say next year I will not be going back to them!
  • My accountant charges $400 to do the business taxes and $100 for my personal.
  • I used to go to H&R Blockheads. I had to pay $350 for them to do both State and Federal returns, then I had to do them over because there were so may errors. I finally did them myself for a few years until I made a mistake in 2002. The Feds said I had $12,000 in unclaimed income when actually it was because I rolled over one investment account into another, I did not take the money, I just re-invested it, but they saw it as a stock sale and I was billed $3600 including penalties. I was telling a friend about it and she said another friend of hers had his taxes done by a local CPA. I went to him and he straightened out my tax problems and now does my taxes, both Stare and Federal, for $100. No problems yet.
  • H&R block was 100 flat fee and then a charge for each additional T-4,or document that they had to look at,cost me 140,and my husband 130.We didnt get the refund right away we sent it off and it took 10 days. I live in Canada,so could be diff?
  • I live in Calgary, Alberta. Can you please inform me of a retired revenue tax preparer or who can I ask to help prepare my personal income tax apart from H & R Block? I would like to pay a fee of $100.00 or less.
  • AARP has retired volunteers that will do your taxes for free. they meet in librarys and community centers and church recreation rooms.
  • $20.00 Canadian
  • If Tim Geithner does them you'll get at least a $34,000 deduction! If Chris Dodd does them you'll get a sweetheat of a deal, and if Charlie Rangel does them..well..you can just forget about 'em.
  • i had my taxes done for free, volunteers did it at a place called Gulf Coast Community Action at 228-865-4375. last year H&R Block did my taxes and charged me about 260 dollars, it was a rip off.
  • I paid over $300 this year. I hate that but they probably save me five times that.
  • I just paid $195.00.
  • $100 - $300
  • You should be able to find a good CPA, attorney, or tax person to do it for $150
  • I used to go to H&R Block. They charged me $300 to file Fed & State returns, but their agent made so many mistakes, I had to bring the forms home and re-do them. They were completely mystified at my capital gains, some of which I had in tax-free investments, but they always put it as taxable income saying there was no such thing as "tax-free" income. For a while I was doing them myself. However in 2002, I made a mistake that ended up costing me $3000. Since them I have gone to a highly recommended private CPA. He charges $100 to do both forms.
  • the cost is usually dependent on how many forms you have and how long does it take for the preparer to prepare. For instance, if you have only a W2, then probably about $75. If you have a W2, rental house, own your own home, have day care for the kids, cashed in an IRA, sold stock, had interest/dividends, etc you can expect to pay $400 or more! VITA sites offer free income tax preparation for those incomes of $45,000 or less. AARP also has free sites and I don't know what their income level is. H&R is not necessarily the cheapest way to go! And remember that only CA and OR are the only states that monitor their tax people, so if you go to Taxes R Us, you may end up with someone who has never taken a tax class! See an Enrolled Agent for the most knowledgeable!
  • We have an accountant that charges $95 to do federal and state. The tax includes a small business as well. From what I've read here we have a real bargain.
