some studies have shown that eating artificial sweeteners could make people put on weight because experiments on laboratory rats showed that those eating food sweetened with artificial sweeteners ate more calories than their counterparts whose food was sweetened with normal sugar. i study these things closely since i depend on them. i have diabetes and must use them.
i must add on the other side of the coin i am not a lab rat but a person :P

No, but they CAN be a problem.
A friend of mine used artificial sweetners excessively, and one day, his doctor informed him that he not only had a bad case of Artificial Diabetes, but that he would have to have injections of Fake Insulin, for the rest of his life.
He was devastated at the news.

According to recent news reports - yes. It has been said that the artificial sweetners play tricks on your brain - that counteract weight loss.
Not that I've heard of..... however stick clear of Nutrasweet as it can give you cancer!
