Why do they call it dope?

    Cocaine and amphetamines inhibit the re-uptake of dopamine. Cocaine is a dopamine transporter blocker that competitively inhibits dopamine uptake to increase the lifetime of dopamine and augments an overabundance of dopamine (an increase of up to 150 percent) within the parameters of the dopamine neurotransmitters. It is from the word Dopamine that we call it dope or at least that's my understanding. Another term is dope sickness this is when an addict is coming down from the increase of dopamine that comes with taking various drugs.

    As a matter-of-fact, back in the 1930's, Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs had Dopey as one of the dwarfs. He acted all stupid & silly; however, there was never any indication of drugs. He was just a bit slow & dumb. This explains why those earlier generations would call someone who was foolish, or silly, or stupid, as 'being dopey', hence, a 'dope'. Later on, it would be used to describe the 'dopers' of the sixties and ever since.

    Back in the old days, the word 'dope' wasn't really associated with drugs. It was a word used to describe an idiot, or fool, or someone really stupid. The WWII generation seemed to like the use of this word (i.e. "Quit acting like a dope."). Then, when the drug era came into being and ever since, they associated the stupid, silly, foolishness of drug users with the word 'dope', which led to phrases like 'taking dope', 'being on dope', 'using dope', 'being a doper', 'doped up', etc.
