Swelling is caused by too much fluid being retained in the body. When you soak your feet in Epsom salt, the salt draws water out of the body. It's like putting cucumbers in salty brine. The salt draws fluid out of it and turns it into a pickle and the pickle becomes smaller than the cucumber it started as. Since you are still a living being, you are not exactly pickling your feet, but you are using the "drawing out" properties of salt to effect a healing response.

Epsom salts also draw out toxins, and a good to bathe in. Add some lavender oil for a really soothing bath right before bed and you will sleep like a baby.
