Yeah, I heard that early from someone who had lived there for awhile.
.
I don't think most of them care that much.
I hadn't heard that, but it's interesting
Hadn't heard this...Maybe they are just a little Friscy... I have always called it San Fran.
Apparently, San Franciscans prefer the nickname for their city to simply be "The City," which is why they get the real, stupid nicknames "Frisco" and "San Fran." It is merely an attempt to pull these people out of their own asses.
My Aunt lives there, she's been there about 25 plus years, she's heard the term Frisco, i use it in front of her and her friends, and they don't object to it.+4
Evidently many do. I don't know how many, really. But most major cities in the US have their nicknames: "The Big Apple", the "Windy City" (Chi-town), "The Big Easy" (New Orleans), and just "L.A.", or "Dego" (San Diego). I don't think anything disparaging is meant, but some may ring wrong with local ears.
Just like people outside of California REALLY hate people calling it "Cali".... I live in Fresno, California. And Despite Media influences, people from California actually aren't as laid back as they are portrayed on TV. We pronounce things here like the good lord intended. :D

You're reading Is it true that the residents of San Francisco, California, object to having their city called "FRISCO" by non-residents? Why? It's not an offensive nickname at all.

It is my experience that the people who are most excited about such things are converts, in this case those who are not actual 'Frisco natives but are eager to be offended on behalf of their new city.

That makes some sort of sense, I guess. Zealousness for "the new home town."
