If a freight train with 200 loaded boxcars is traveling 45 miles an hour and has to stop quickly how far will it travel before it comes to a stop?

    That depends on multiple factors. What is the loco hauling? What is the tare weigth of the cargo? What is the topography of the landscape? What is the braking capacity of the loco and cars? With out these responces, it is impossible to give an accurate answer. A class 87 loco (UK electric) carrying 200 empty wagons on a flat would take just over 1 1/4 miles to come to a complete stop. The same loco carrying 200 wagons of cars (for example) would take over 3 miles. That's why signals on main line freight routes are a great distance apart and have multi aspects.
