Pior to American independence the British weights and measures system was all over the place. Many different systems were used for many different reasons. The US colonies decided to take the guesswork out of everything and officially adopted the English "wine gallon" as a "gallon".

Several years after US independence the Brits decided to get their act together and adopted the "ale gallon", which was slightly larger, as their "offical" Imperial Gallon. The rest of the differences resulted from this decision.

    Hope this helps.
