'Maybe' means 'perhaps'. 'May be' means 'might be'.

they're both used when there is a probability that is not certain that something will happen, and it really just comes down to sentence structure. Usually maybe is used in a sentence before the subject or a noun : "Maybe I should've studied more." Where as May be usually comes after the subject or a noun: " It may be true that we misread the rules."
