Help answer this question below.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been misunderstood by many people. We teach that Jesus Christ did progress (see Luke 2:52 and Doctrine and Covenants 93:13). We do teach that God the Father has a body of flesh and bone. Think about this: If it's better to be a spirit rather than to have a body, then why was Jesus resurrected? Elder Robert D. Hales pointed out that sometimes our doctrines makes us unpopular. We can't compromise or change the doctrine. We are still Christians, even if others disagree with us.
We are well aware, as you have suggested. But we cannot help what we have received from God, about Himself.
I suppose if some are offended at our doctrines, it is their problem not ours. We do not intend to change our doctrine to please others.
We acknowledge their discomfort and pray for them. But I can assure you, your doctrines are just as astounding to us as ours are to you.
Our doctrines, as I said, come from God through Christ, they are what they are. To us it is easier to believe in something we can picture in our mind, than to believe in something that has no body, or form or substance, of which we cannot even imagine.
Our God is the result of revelation through a Prophet of God. Their God is the result of men concocting a concept without the aide of the Bible. Should we really be concerned, if they do not accept our God? ...Later
I disagree that this is a doctrine. It is a saying that is widely misunderstood and misinterpreted. As I told my mom, the correct principle of the saying "as God once was, man is ... as God is, man can become" is that God himself came down among us as man so he could be our Redeemer, and those who accept him as our God and Savior can become heirs of salvation and return to be with the Lord our God as his sons and daughters.
I admit that I have heard some wild theories about the Lord having to *evolve* into a God and that his Father did the same thing, but these are the musings of people who don't listen to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is very clear that Jesus Christ has always been and always will be our God, even the Almighty, and that he changes not.
As my mom points out, the whole reason the Savior's birth is often referred to as the condescension of God is that it is God himself who came down from heaven to be among us. He was, is, and always shall be our Eternal God ... or the whole plan of salvation is moot.
"And he said unto me: Knowest thou the condescension of God? And I said unto him: I know that he loveth his children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things. And he said unto me: Behold, the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son of God, after the manner of the flesh....And I looked, and I beheld the Son of God going forth among the children of men; and I saw many fall down at his feet and worship him." [1 Nephi 11:16-18, 24]

You're reading "Educated Mormons are well aware that their doctrine concerning God the Father, particularly the idea that he was once a mortal man and has a literal body, is offensive to traditional Judeo-Christian believers." (Mormon America, p. 301) Thoughts?

First, +6 for your honest
.
Second, your whole answer focused on doctrinal disagreement with the LdS Church. That was the basic thesis and the core of your arguments.
.
So please help me understand how those who are Atheists or non-affiliated Agnostics and have NO doctrinal disagreement with the LDS Theology whatsoever are incapable of writing scholarly, objective, and accurate Mormon History.
.
I'm referring to authors like Jon Krakauer, Will Bagley, David Roberts and many, many, many others.
.
Third, could you also please help me understand why LdS Scholars who write TRUE Mormon History rather than FAITHFUL Mormon History get disfellowshiped (Grant Palmer) or Ex'd (The September Six for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_Six).
.
All of these people are top notch scholars usually with numerous awards, degrees, and impressive resumes. Yet their work is condemned rather than praised by the General Authorities and Mormon Culture.
.
I find that odd.
