If the Maker of the Universe came to Earth to preach to humans, wouldn't this be sort of like the Dalai Lama trying to teach morality to a colony of fleas?

That's a paradox, I think! If the Maker of the Universe came as himself, it would be way above our grasp and comprehension, just like your colony of fleas and the Dalai Lama. If however he would lower himself to our level, we would find it impossible to accept that it was the Maker of the Universe and we might even crucify him again.
