I think the route is usually agent, then publisher as most publishing houses won't accept unsolicited manuscripts.

It takes a lot more than just an experience. You have to actually write a book. And, one experience does not make a book. There are so many different elements to a successful book it's not even funny.

There is a book published every year called Writer's Market. It lists all the legitimate publishers there are.
