  • I think you're talking about what is usually called a "3 way switch". This type of switch is actually like 2 switches in one, where one switch has been turned upside-down so that it's ON in the down position. When 2 of these units are mounted in a room, they're "cross-wired" so that there are actually 2 possible circuits which will turn the light on. Each switch closes one of the circuits in each position, so it is the COMBINATION of the two switch positions which completes the circuit.
