My dad used to sit me on his lap and work the peddals while I steared when I was 4. I used to stear for him when I was too old to sit on his lap anymore. I began driving on dirt roads around 12 when I could reach the peddals myself at which point it seemed like an eternity until I could get my licence at 16 1/2 years old.

I think the first time I drove a car was when I was 15. I started to really learn around late 16, early 17 when I had my learners permit. Learned on a 5 speed so it took me a bit longer. I think I was pretty much up to par in a week or so as far as vehicle operation. As far as road rules, I'm still learning.

I started driving the tractor on our farm at age 12, close to age 13. Got my permit to drive said tractor down the road a piece when I was 14 (Back then they allowed us kids to drive tractors on the rural roads).

Started driving a truck when I was late 14 - across the fields - mostly ;-) got my real license when I was 16.

I wasn't allowed to use the combine until I was 16. I didn't get to use the tiller, baler, etc until I was 15, but I was pulling the small trailer with the tractor at age 14.

My experience is a bit backward I imagine, having a good chunk of driving with multiple gears and two brakes (one for each tire in the rear of the tractor, helps with turning on a dime) across fields and back and forth to the barn and down the road about a mile to the other fields (mostly feed corn and hay).

It took like a month of practice to get driving a tractor down to where my dad let me do it unsupervised. Driving the truck was a bit easier, and with no 'formal' education beyond watching what my dad did when he drove it.

Getting a feel for a vehicle takes a bit of practice no matter how well you drive in another vehicle.

Say about a week or two of daily practice of about 30 minutes to fully understand the basics of driving, to get a feel for the way a vehicle reacts. A few hours of real study for all of the stuff like signage, road rules, etc.

Stick is a bit more tricky, you have to get the movement of clutch, brake and shifter all timed correctly and get a feel for the engine in the steering wheel (vibration) to know when to shift gears.

Automatic probably takes less time to learn owing to the lack of clutch and shifter.

My mother started letting me learn to drive when I was tall enough to reach the pedals and see over the steering wheel at the same time. I was 10 then. She thought that it was important to learn, since we lived a long way from any thing. If something should happen to her, I could drive and get help. I took to driving like I was born doing it. To this day 40 some years later, I can proudly say that I have had only 1 minor accident in my driving career, which produced no injuries to any humans. The car didn't fair as well though. Poor car.

I paid someone for driving lessons when I was in my early 20's because my boyfriend made me. He was embarrassed that I did not drive. Then I stopped after a year because I had zero interest in a car in Chicago. There is not a lot of reason to have one. Then when I was 40 I said it's time. And I got one and I never looked back. Been driving for years now and am completely reliant on the car.

My father or mother never taught me to drive, they were paranoid id go out and get pregnant, do drugs, whatever so i wasnt allowed. Im 20 now and just learning how. Unfortunatly on a crappy car with a learner permit and no one to help me learn to drive. Im hoping i can pass the test next week unless i get too nervous and fail horribly on thier car.
