How many times a day do you swear? Why do you swear? When you do swear, and you swearing seriously or just because you know the word and it has no true meaning?

Swear words are commonly used by New Zealanders and Australians as descriptive rather than insulting. Such as You bastard you! or lucky bastard! (congratulations), or that job was a bit of a bugger (difficult); or variations thereof; there's no intention to offend if its said in a friendly tone. I use swear words like this all day. I don't usually swear in an angry way until I feel under pressure like losing my keys when I'm late for work. Then I throw things around and swear like a marine.

- I am an American & I use stuff like Bollocks, Bloody Hell, etc. to express myself because my 4 y/o daughter picks up on it. It's HILARIOUS to hear her yell bloody hell from across the house.

- Yeah I don't see any harm in mild swearing in your own home, especially when you're just expressing yourself or herself. I think it's the aggression/hate behind some swearing that's the problem, not the words themselves. There's twice as bad attitude and words on any music video.

- That's the truth. There's a BIG difference between you asshole (laughing while saying it) becuase someone just pranked you & yelling ASSHOLE because you are overly angry about something minor. My hubby is like that. He makes the biggest deals about the smallest issues & degrades everyone verbally while doing it. That's borderline abusive.

- Borderline hell. A lot of men have trouble expressing their anger constructively, but criticise women who try to talk it through. Having said that, I've met a few women who punch first and ask questions later, as well.

- Yes. His past wife blacked his eye 2 times & he just pushed himself into being married. They only stayed married for 4 months & then split up. Her ex-husband actually had her arrested because she hit him too. My husband just never had the balls to call the cops on her. I doubt that he would be that passive now if I were to hit him. I never would thou. I had 5 older bros & they said "unless you want to get treated like a man, don't act like one." Good advice.

- I get a double message from your comment: your husband "would never be that passive now.." (implying admiration of strength) to "just never had the balls" (that he was/is weak). You seem to love him and he obviously needs to be able to deal with the anger better. Verbal anger is just another variation of physical anger and suggests there are some deep-seated issues. The weakness you see in another person is often the weakness you fear/dislike most in yourself. I investigated this idea in my own relationship and came up with some surprising answers.

- He was married for 20 yrs & had 3 kids w/ his 1st wife. He was on the rebound & would have done anything for this psycho. Now that he has learned his lesson about letting ppl get away w/ abuse, he thinks that he should treat me like less of a person. I shouldn't be punished for his ex's mistakes. He has a new outlook where he won't take anymore crap from women but I am not a person who would hurt someone, but he has his guard up.

- I relate to that exactly. But you're absolutely right that you shouldn't be paying for his ex's mistakes and his over reactions, even verbal are harmful. He needs to see you are a different person and that you are treating him in a different way; that you are a strong person who can stand up for herself in a non-confrontational , loving way. Pull him up short if you think he is confusing your behaviour with hers, he needs to get the distinction.

Being a writer, characters in my stories swear sometimes, some more than others; it's part of developing the character. But in real life, I rarely swear or curse.

I don't swear, and it bothers me when others do. I find it to be a total lack of control of what comes out of someone's mouth. It is so sad that society has degraded to the point it is a common occurrence. It falls right in line with the very poor grammar so prevalent today.

maybe 5 times a day at work when i'm working, and 3 times on the road when there's an idiot doing something that ticks me off.

on the road, i swear bc i'm angry. i say things like the f word. i don't know why i really curse, bc they can't even hear me.

i do the same thing at work if i make a mistake. i'll say the f word to myself (bc i don't curse around others).

Having worked with truck drivers for years, been a heavy equipment operator in the Army, and now working as a mechanic, if my mom were to hear me now, she'd need a whole bucket of soap. But I'm careful around children and other women. I had to give a live hour-long TV interview recently, and I asked the interviewer to put a kid in the front row. He didn't do that, but he did suggest that if I slipped up with the F-word, to follow it with "crying out loud." ("F***crying out loud.")

- Funny you said that. I used to be a paramedic. LOL. Now I just work for a lowly cabinet company. I DO have to answer the phones though. I should come to work drunk everyday. I can't stand the builders calling. They cry like a bunch of bitches all the time abnd it makes me nuts. At least when I'm drunk I can deal with it.

When I'm not at work, I curse constantly. I'm learning to watch what I say around my daughter, because she knows the correct usage of the word "sh!t" in regards to when she messes up with something. Funny, but highly inappropiate.

0. My position at work requires me to "maintain a professional attitude". I am not saying that the odd swear word doesn't slip out every now and then, but on a typical day 0. At home I have no reason to swear.

I swear on average about 30-50 times a day, on certain days more, on certain days less. I don't know why I swear, the swear words just come out. Like, if my computer stalls, I'll say, "holy f***ing sh*t", if I'm excited, I'll say "f**k yeah!". I often swear just for the sake of swearing, every other word that comes out of my mouth is a swear word. I never mean it, when I swear, it usually does have no meaning. I'm not swearing at anyone, just swearing in general.

I swear alot. Not in anger, just as general discriptive words. F*ck is a surprisingly good adjective. I'd like to cut down though. I think it may have something to do with my upbringing. Swear words were absolutley forbidden in my house, to even say one by accident was a major infraction. I can pretty much tell you what every brand of soap tastes like, and none of them taste good.
