  • Echinacea boosts the immune system. It is not recommended that it be taken long term. It sort of fakes the body out, making it think it's sicker than it really is, and so the immune system kicks in. If you were to take it without let up for weeks on end, eventually your body would grow used to it. This could set you up for trouble. Directions vary, but in general, it's on for two or three weeks, then off for a week. If the person taking it has an auto-immune disorder, they should be very cautious about echinacea, or any immune enhancing herb, without oversight by an expert on this subject.
