  • Well in the mid 1800's you have the compromise of 1850 which tried assigning a slave or non slave label to the new territories gained from the Mexican-American war. This also brought the idea of popular sovereignty, or, people voting whether or not their state would be a slave state or not. Then of course in the 1860's you have the events leading up to the civil war and then the civil war itself which, in many people's opinions, was fought over slavery primarily (but not the only reason).
  • President Abraham Lincoln decreed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862....but, the state i live in now (texas) was the last state to ablolish slavery....in 1865......this is kind of weird for me, cuz Lincoln is from Illinois......i was born in IL....but i live in Texas now..
