Wikipedia has a good article on Bulgaria: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgaria It is a struggling country, with an ecomony that is only just starting to recover from years of Communist rule. The unemployment rate is fairly high. I imagine going there as a tourist from a more developed nation would be a good thing, as your money would go further. I don't know about living there. You would have to learn a new language, culture and way of life. That might be something you are prepared to do, though, so don't let me put you off on that account.

Some friends of mine have recently been there on holiday, the loved it and are going back there in spring! There was sth on the news a few months ago about people (lads) getting beaten up by bouncers when leaving strip clubs, sth about them being promised free drinks and then being charges ridiculous amounts and beaten when they couldn't pay.... But seeing my friends had no problems, I guess as long as you stay away from strip clubs and just use your head, it shouldn't be any more dangerous than anywhere else!

You have to be extra vigilant about your belongings especially in countries like Romania and Bulgaria where hustling and theft are at a high rate.

Its my country :) Its great for vacantion, expecialy now. There are tons of hotels build recently, but there are still camps too. Depends what u want. I recomend the south part of our seashore. And no matter how drunk u are here, there is always someone whos more :D My favorite town at the sea is Sozopol. Its great, just avoid going there at the season peak, bacouse its too crowded.

Bulgaria is a nice place for holidays. I have not been there for 5 years so do not know how much it has progressed to say if it is a good place to buy a permanent home.

Well we moved here permanently 3 years ago and have not regretted it at all. The countryside is very attractive, variegated and extensive, and the country is very thinly populated (the same size as England, with 1/10 th of the population). Property prices in the cities and seaside resorts are on a par with Spain / Portugal, but in the villages extremely affordable, even with enough land to be at least partially self sufficient. There is a great deal of freedom from bureaucracy, but not much state aid or infrastructure investment. Most large centres have typical European supermarkets. Weather is extreme: over 40 degrees in the summer and below -20 degrees in the winter, but we haven't had a cough or cold since we've been here. Come out and give it a try - April/May or October/November would be more comfortable weather unless you prefer the Sea (July/August) or snow (December to March).
