Bill Cosby's murdered son wore T-shirts that said "Hello Friend". I would think such a person would be kind, caring and accepting. Happy Wednesday! :)

I find it sad that we feel the need to find hidden meanings of what we say. True enough that those who try to con will often refer to you as their friend and try to trick you into something.

The truth is not everyone who says "My friend" means this in a bad way. I have said it myself and meant nothing bad about it.

Originally this saying was meant to be a good thing. A way of saying I have never met anyone I could not be friendly to. That I feel a connection with this person or simply I see you as a possible friend.

Too often we are quick to judge and always seem to think the worst before we ever honestly know the intent. We do this because we do not want to be conned.

Sure we should keep our guard up when we are not sure but should hold back on judgment until we know for sure the reason behind the words.

Some people say this as a manner of speach. It usually means nothing except they are trying to be friendly. If they are a con artist, they will show themselves soon enough.

    I consider the remark:

    1. impolite, and,

    2. suggests that the speaker has some sort of agenda.

I say, "What gave you the impression that I was your friend, you should be careful, mistakes like that can get you in alot of trouble", unless it is a chick or a dude with a hot girlfriend, then I just say "hey". I am also not your brother!!! I will however accept "brother from another mother"... sometimes.

They're crazy, they're nice, or they're trying to sell you something, and they're all three sides of the same die.

Until they prove other wise, I usually view strangers as friends. From the time I was very small, I have been very good at reading people. Once in awhile, I find a person that I know right from the get go, that they aren't going to be a friend ever. So most of the time, if a stranger calls me friend, I don't mind.

That can be said in a friendly, insincere or even hostile way. My reaction would entirely depend on what I would read into it.

Run, he's either trying to sell you something.
Or if he is trying to get a deal, tell them you always give your friends the best deal you have and so therefore already have.
Or if your a minor and he or she is older, Run.
Now if they are foreign, in some cultures it isn't uncommon to call you friend and it be the first time you met. Like comrade is commonly used for russians, at least in all the russian black market movies. LOL

depends on the tone... i've had people say my friend in a sarcastic way and i reply that they are far from being my friend, but i've had people that say it just as a standard term of endearment... no harm done...

Strangers often say mate or pal in speech, so it isn't a big deal to me.
