It depends on whether the host country is third-world and eager for tourists or is more like Europe and is accustomed to the influx of foreigners. Countries that are most affected are the ones who have come to rely on tourism as an absolutely essential part of their economy, such as Egypt. Countries who are just starting to welcome tourism often end up with seriously compromised ecosystems (not to mention ruined scenery) when they overdevelop in irresponsible ways.
