To answer, I really don't know, but in cooking pinto beans/bacon, I was taught that is the only way to do it so everything is yummy. I'm guessing they need that much time to soften up. +5

pinto beans end up getting smashed into something the is called refried beans. they are not presented like lima beans in a bowl and a serving spoon. so softness is essential and speeds the process.
