That depends on how much they want me to have it.
I would thank them for it, but I would also let them know it arrived broken.
They spent good money for it, it may have been insured. In some cases the store also will ship and the packing may not have been the friend's error. No matter WHO packed it, it was not intended to get broken, it was an accident.
Either way, I would find it far more uncomfortable to lie to them (or omit the truth) and then when they visit be caught out in the fib. Doubtless THEY would feel very uncomfortable catching me in a fib as well!
I would tell them about it. Who knows? They may have paid for insurance on the package. I would want to know if I sent something like that. +5
Just thank them and let it go unless it was something of great value.
