Question

Help answer this question below.

I was watching the Dodger game the other night on TV. Russel Martin was at bat on ball four the pitch hit the catcher in the mask and bounded out of play into the Cubs dugout. Martin was only awarded first base! Shouldn't he have gotten second base?

ab19901 is correct, in this situation because the ball went out of play as a result of the pitch it is one base.

If a defensive player had chased the ball and touched it causing the ball to go out of play, then it would be a two base award from the time of the pitch.

The one base award was correct. If a pitch (as opposed to a throw) goes out of play, the award is one base from the time of the pitch. Because Martin was a batter/runner, his award was only first base. Any runner on base would have been awarded one base from the time of the pitch. It's rule 7.05(h).
