"A person who knowingly and falsely represents himself to be a peace officer of any jurisdiction commits a Class 4 felony." 720 ILCS 5/32-5.1 Even saying "I am a police officer," if in fact you are not one and know you are not one (e.g. not insane), constitutes impersonating a police officer. Nothing requires that the person hearing you actually believes you. That said, the only way to formally press charges is to file a police report.

I believe the state of illinois law, is identical to that of tennessee. its called criminal impersonation. the vocal part of stating you are a police officer, and in fact your are not, is a criminal offense. but, there are other means of impersonating a police officer. wearing a uniform, having the departments patches or insignias, etc., also is impersonating a police officer. criminal impersonation of a police officer, is a serious offense and is not taken lightly in criminal court in any of the united states. you need proof in order to have someone arrested for criminal impersonation. video tape, tape recordings, phone conversations are all excellent proof and admissable in court. once you have your proof, take your evidence to your local district attorney. if he agrees to file your case, you will then be asked to come before a grand jury and present evidence. the grand jury will then grant a true or no true bill, meaning yes, your case will move to trial or no, your evidence was not susbstantial for a true bill, or no trial. hope this helps.

is signing your name on an e-mail to a company that will not honor their infomartion promotions impersonating a police officer? Since they kept hanging up on me and they owed me $300.00 I signed my name and on the bottom I wrote Special Agent U,S, secret service. on e-mail only. Just to get some reponse. I never verbally said I was a police officer or flashed a badge. Today, people put any bugus titles on e-mails. I am the victim here and I never had the intent to impersonate an officer. The US secret service and the US attornet's office want to prosecute me. I have dome millions of research on the internet and I do not see anyone getting prosecuting for placing a title under the name to force a fraudulent Company to response. Actually, I cannot find anyone at all. Any suggestions or help??????
