If it had nothing to do with the crash, one might surmise that the news organizations wouldn't have taken pains to point it out, and the FAA wouldn't have removed the controller from duty:
"An air traffic controller was joking on the phone about barbecuing a dead cat at the time of a fatal mid-air crash over the Hudson River, according to leaked transcripts...The Federal Aviation Administration removed the air traffic controller from duty"

News agencies will exploit anything they think the public will turn into a big deal, they like to make huge occurences out of harmless things. the ATCer couldn't have done a thing about the crash, now if he had told the pilot the wrong frequency, then that would be a story
