Question

Help answer this question below.

Do the moderators for this site get paid for what they do? Another site I'm on, I work as a moderator and it's purely voluntary.. no pay, but a free subscription to the site so that counts I guess... I've always wondered.

I'm just guessing, but I think that Moderators are on AB's payroll and are compensated. I suspect it is not their only source of income.

Community Leaders, on the other hand, again I beleive, provide the Site their services on a voluntary basis, and are thus unpaid. And it's likely a thankless job, as well.

There are some staff moderators, who have site moderation as part of their job descriptions, so they obviously get paid.

There are also a number of so-called Community Leaders (CLs), who are just ordinary users who are paid nothing. The main moderating activity of the CLs is blocking the accounts of spammers and users who flout Answerbag's Terms of Service (excessive profanity, insulting other users and similar things). They don't flag questions/answers as nonsense, spam, etc, except in the case of something so extreme it needs removing immediately, but leave that to other users who can earn points for doing it.

If by "mods" you mean moderators, I believe they are paid users here. AB is a wesbite that is run and was developed by engineers. The engineers that are responsible for the functionality of the site are paid. In addition to this, the moderators are responsible for content being seized and users being removed based on ill behavior. To my knowledge the only persons not paid's are CL's and users like us. Otherwise, moderators are in the upper tier of responsibility for the site, which I believe requires payment.

The "Moderators" of the site are volunteers. WE flag questions and answers.

The "Staff Moderators", from my understanding, are both volunteers and paid for their work. (Some work for AB/Demand Media.)

Since AB is a free site, the "free subscription" means little, here. ;-)
