  • I would think "unthaw" is not a proper word! :)
  • I am with _tani1 - "unthaw" is not a word.
  • If something needs to be thawed it is frozen. To Thaw= to melt away or de-ice or de-freeze by warming up somehow. Unthaw is a slang synonym, although I think the correct word usage would be to thaw something that was frozen. I think unthaw is a misuse of the verb thaw or a non-word- even though it might be in a dictionary.
  • thaw only
  • wsu.edu/~brians/errors/unthaw.html says: WRONG:. UNTHAW. RIGHT:. THAW. “Unthaw” is another illogical negative
  • Wow lots of helpful things. Thanks!

  • For the same reason people say the "I could care less" or "Have your cake and eat it too". Americans know little of the English language and say what they want. They mostly repeat the sayings of their families - right or wrong.
  • I agree that "unthaw" is not a word. Ironic...I was just making fun of someone for saying this a few days ago. Personally, I think if you "unthaw" something then you must be freezing it again. The correct term is thaw.
  • I've never heard of unthaw. If there were a word, I'd say unthaw = refreeze.
  • I've never heard of unthaw.
  • They don't.
  • I think when many people say dethaw (unthaw is just plain wrong) it's just a twisted form of trying to say defrost
  • Regardless if unthaw is a word or not. If you're going to thaw something you're going to unfreeze it, right? So to un-thaw something would mean that you're going to freeze it again. Make sense? It's as clear as mud to me.
  • You are absolutely correct. It is a long accepted incorrect term used by those who were less educated than you and I (our parents and there parents), but passed it along...unthaw the turkey, unthaw the ham, unthaw the frozen pipes. Simply the power of our upbringing. It's OK to use because we will be challenged by very few if any. The had similar upbringings; black, white, green or purple. There are more important things to be concerned with.
  • LOL!!! I didn't know that. I would think "unthaw" would mean refreeze! :D
  • Because people are barely literate. It's TV and computers: the death of intellectualism.
  • As wrong as it may be. You nor I have the power to change it's misuse. that's why it is in the dictionary. From where I come from it has always been: unthaw the turkey. Too many of us have been cut from the same cloth. Leave it alone. There are worst things in this world.
  • It doesn't always mean that. For instance, if I say "don't try to cook unthawed meat," it is pretty clear that I am telling you not to cook meat that has NOT been thawed. I don't know why people say unthaw...probably because thawing something out has the sense of undoing something that you had previously done, I suppose. I have also heard "dethaw."
  • Unthaw would mean to refreeze, I think. Because if something was thawed and you wanted to UNdo that, you'd refreeze it.
  • they don't. unthaw or as my wife use to say dethaw would mean to refreeze.
  • They don't mean the same thing. It is similar to saying "nucular" when you mean nuclear. Some folks'r jist igorent.
  • i feel its right up there with hot water heater. who the hell needs to heat hot water anyways.
  • lol is that mr. rodgers?
  • They do not mean the same thing.
