As the Netherlands are low lying they need many Polders (Dykes) to keep the water from the North Sea in check. One of the most famous Polders is the Afsluitdijk that seperates the North Sea from the Ijsselmeer which is fresh water.

The Polder was the creation of Dutch engineer Cornelis Lely and was finished in 1932.The Polder is 20 miles long (32km) 90 Metres wide, and 7.25 metre's above sea level. There are many smaller Dykes and hundreds of small canals that help drain the surface rainwater from the agricultural land.Every now and again the excess surface water is let out into the North Sea.Its an experience to drive across the Afluitsdijk especially in a rain storm, and when you are half way across it feels like you are out at sea. There is a man made Island on the Amsterdam side called Lelyland which the main town is Lelystadt which has holiday accomodation.Well worth a visit to the Polder or the town if you are ever in Holland.

It is true. In fact, large parts of the Netherlands only exists because of dikes. If they went away, the country would be severely diminished.
