It looks like you can use "& sup1;" for a superscript 1, "& sup2;" for a superscript 2 (squared), "& sup3;" for a superscript 3 (cubed). (No spaces between the "&" and "sup"). I didn't see a way for subscripts to work. Remember that each of the above takes up 5 characters of your question, answer, or comment. From http://www.tedmontgomery.com/tutorial/HTMLchrc.html .
