Why do I sometimes get painfully shocked by certain exterior metal components of my laptop?

    hmmm..because its grounding on the case? i'm not sure... i just did a bit on a dell latitude and i grounded it at shutdown, which struck me as weird. perhaps it grounds to itself when not connected to ac directly?

    A shock from the metal on the casing is about 90% probability a static shock but if it's from a USB port or an Ethernet port, it could have "surged" if your finger connected the negative and positive ends in the port the oils on your fingers will burn up from the conductivity. It's very rare but if your not paying attention and your pressing your finger in the port it could surge.
