Please DON’T take this as racist! My husband family is from Italy. 1 day during a discussion w/ African American co workers, I referred 2 him as an Italian American. Some seemed offended but didnt comment as to why. Did I make a mistake? What's ur take?

I think there is a misunderstanding when referring to people in the US. all Americans come from a differant country, except native Americans. however the US government specifically has a policy of identifying minority races. so all minority races are labeled as "pick" Americans. majorities tend to identified themselves by ancestor when it is convenient. so it is unusual to hear a person saying "I am an German American, or I am a British American because that is where there family immigrated from. so normally white Americans are called "Americans" and minority have a label in front of American. think of it:

    Asian American
    Hispanic American
    African American

How long would a employment application be if it had every Nationality Identified.

we should do like all the other industrialized countries and call everybody an American, you never hear of a African French, or a Hispanic Canadian.

I just refuse to call any of us xxxxAmericans. We're just Americans.

I don't think you made a mistake and I can't imagine what they were offended about.

Maybe they want sole custody of the -American hyphenate?

I know what you mean I am a Italian-American my parents are also Italian-Americans but there parents are Italians. I get the same feeling when I referred to my self as an Italian-American in front of any ethnics group that is deemed something-American. I don’t know why some people get “offended” but some people don’t think twice about it. But to answer your question I don’t think you made a mistake.

You didn't make a mistake. And they didn't say anything because they're plotting against you. Grab the kids and head for high ground.

I cannot see anything wrong with you referring to him as Italian American. That is just denoting his national heritage. Oh, "Italian" is not an ethnic heritage... it is a national heritage. There are many ethnicities in Italy.

Of course, "African American" has the same problem.

I cannot imagine any logical person, of any ethnicity or nationality, being offended by that. Could the people who were offended have had a problem with Italians in the past?

I don't see why they are offended. I feel you did nothing wrong. Don't feel bad about it.

If you are really concerned, maybe ask them what it was about the statement that offended them.

I think what you said was fine. Some people are extraordinarily over-sensitive about some subjects, and you seem to have run into some of them. Too bad for them.

I think the people who got offended are being stupid. I mean honestly, how is it offensive to refer to someone's heritage and also the country they were born in/are a legal resident of?

    You did nothing wrong.
