If polygamist were to just not get married would they still be brakeing the law?

  • If they were not married to multiple women and just dating them, then they would not actually be a polygamist... polygamist means "one who has many wives", so having many girlfriends makes you a dirty cheating rat, but not actually a polygamist - you must be married to multiple women 'qualify'. So no, the law is not being broken.

    This is how people like the FLDS get around the anti-polygamy laws. Only the first marriage is a civil marriage. The others are "spiritual marriages". Therefore, they are not technically breaking the law with respect to this. As far as the civil laws are concerned, they are only committing adultery and it has been a long time since anyone could be prosecuted for that.
