I had a similar problem many years ago. The car went to garages repeatedly, and no one could diagnose the problem. This was a long time ago, and it was possible to take the fuel pump off the side of the engine and operate it manually. When I did that the car would start.
It turned out that I had a worn valve, and the engine was overheating just at that particular point. The fuel line went past, and what was happening was that the heat was causing the fuel to vaporise in the line.
Not sure that this problem will be helpful in your case, but at least it shows that it helps to look in unexpected places.
the starter shouldn't overheat when it is not being used
you can check to see if the heat shields are dmamged
if the engine won't crank, it may have to do with the computer controled advance
it could be trying to start fully advanced
depending on where you live it could be vapor lock
it would help to know if the ebngine cranks, or just doesn't start

I have a golf plus tdi 2005.My cigar lighter socket is not working,i have looked at the fuses but dont know which is which?.

You're reading When I drive long distances in my 1989 VW Golf and turn off the engine it refuses to start back up and I have to wait about half hour for it to cool down, it has something to do with the starter over heating. Any one got any idea what exactly might it be
