Help answer this question below.
It might be faster in posting, but using those shortcuts will make many AB'ers avoid questions since they can't understand them as easily as regular text.
Not everyone uses three laptops....and some of us would like to preserve the English language.
Some of us prefer to preserve the semblance of literacy.
Hlps crdblty 2 b abl 2 spel.
Frankly I don't like them myself - I'm old school, ( before personal computers, ). And I prefer the clarity of whole words and phrases to dubious shortcuts which might be misunderstood.
I type 75-80 words a minute; so I don't really need the shortcuts.
Shortcuts can be helpful to the experienced internet user, but AB has people from all walks of life, some whom are somewhat "computer illiterate". By asking and answering questions in complete sentences, you are likely to reach more people. Thus getting more responses to questions, and more easily answering questions for the people who you are answering.
+5 lol at work i type without vowels for the most part and is quicker. without vowels my answer would look like this.
at wrk i typ wthout vwls 4 mst prt and is qicker.
because this is a Q&A site, not some communication compression competition. clarity is what matters, answers do not even have a charactor limit.
because textscrit was invented for phones where each letter can take over a second to complete, I do not know what kind of laptops you have buy my desktop has a full qwerty keyboard.
because translating into and out of textscrit takes time. it is not like we are banning abreviations, noone objects to you calling answerbag AB.
did I mention the qwrety keyboard?
well formulated out CLEAR thoughts are prefered over how much you can jot down in 10 seconds.
the ONLY advantage to textscrit is on questions and comments you could say more... but the confusion would end up forcing you to type mroe in the answers and followup comments because people could not understand
Because some of us have more than a 5th grade level of spelling & grammar. I can't take anybody seriously when they can't be bothered to type out words like "you" and "are."
because they are annoying... and some people don't understand all of the shorthand lingo...
short cuts are really confusing sometimes. My mind can't wrap around computer jargon..
it take me ages just to translate a conversation between my brother and his girlfriend on the computer like this one
r u gun b @ teh mall?
nah dood u?
may b 2 morow u?
may b
c u l8ter
k
i was so confused! D: and im 17 I should know this stuff!
Ok boys and girls, I experimented with both styles and the results...
.
Typing longhand I managed 16 words a minute...
.
Using that texting shorthand I got 8,312 words a second!!
.
Hey... I was also surprised.
three laptops at once, boy arent you a busy man
Seem like a good idea, but i'm old school, i like to stay with the English language.+4
I understand why shortcuts are used, but I don't use them even in texting. I have a mental block that prevents me from using 'u' as a substitute for 'you', for example.
Well, because most of us are not on three laptops at once for starters.
It's not really that difficult for me to type like a grown up. In fact, I think it would be harder for me to try to type in txt speak. I suppose that's one of the few blessings that goes along with not having any friends in high school; I have no one to text, so I don't ever have to do it.
I find them to be irritating and aggravating.
Texting shortcuts develop in relatively small communities, and are by no means 'global' to the english language. It is a sort of slang than ties the group together.
And with me being an old fart, i am being kept out. 'u' for 'you' I can understand as an example of writing what it sounds like, but does '8' mean 'ate' or 'hate' or 'eight', to you that may be clear from context, but to me that sort of thing prevents me from discovering what the context is.
By the way do you understand the texting abbreviations 'so', 'bf', 'gc' and 'bc' ? they are extensively used on another US forum I frequent. But that forum is targeted at housewives and unless you are one I doubt you can guess what they mean.
Some of us would love to, but have a hard enough time making our regular text ledgable through all the spelling errors we makke.

You're reading I wonder why ABers don't use texting short cuts when answering? I am on three laptops at once, I find shortcuts to be very helpful.
